Austria reaches record of infections by coronavirus and the Government proposes to confine the unvaccinated

Austria has counted in the last 24 hours 11,975 new infections of coronavirus, a new maximum since the pandemic began and almost ten times more than a month ago, while the Government negotiates with the most affected regions the confinement of the unvaccinated.

The Ministry of Health yesterday raised to the local governments of Salzburg and Upper Austria, the two most affected regions, to apply a confinement to those who are not vaccinated, something that was, for now, rejected.

These two federal states have the lowest percentages of vaccinated population in the country, 56.5 and 55% respectively, compared to 60% on average in Austria.

Those two regions also have the highest rates of new infections in relation to their population.

The Austrian Government did approve last week, in coordination with the nine federal states, to prohibit the entrance to gastronomy establishments, beauty centers or events with more than 25 people to those who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus or have passed the disease.

The central executive, made up of the Popular Party and the Greens, has ensured that there will be no confinement for those who are already vaccinated if the occupation of intensive care units reaches worrying levels and more restrictions are necessary.
