Why are many Russians traveling to Croatia to get vaccinated against the coronavirus?

Despite an increase in infections with coronavirus on Croatia, the country has become a favorite destination for Russians seeking Western vaccines, which they need to travel through Europe and the United States.

The largest vaccination facility in Zagreb, the capital, has a separate queue for foreigners. The authorities indicate that they are mostly Russians on day trips to be vaccinated.

“(The Russians) are living for their third dose,” said Valentino Rajkovic, coordinator at the vaccination fair in Zagreb. “In two weeks, they receive their COVID passports.”

Russians have also been traveling to the neighboring Serbia to get vaccinated, because the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and others available in your country have not been approved by the World Health Organization and the European Medicines Agency. Therefore, Russian citizens cannot travel to the West with Russian inoculations.

Boris Kulatmetov reported that he needs to travel to European Union countries to see his clients and has no other way to arrange business meetings, so he came to Croatia to receive a vaccine that allows him to travel.

“That is what I cannot get in Russia, an acceptable vaccine in Europe”, he said, as he waited in line for his turn.

Andriy, who only gave his first name, recounted that he wants to receive the J&J vaccine, which is very popular because it only requires one dose. He added that that makes Croatia “comfortable” for foreign visitors.

Getting vaccinated abroad is now known as “vaccine tourism” and is usually organized by travel agencies that offer it as part of tourist packages that include accommodation and excursions.

The Croatian press has reported that the additional flights are organized from Russia, with dozens of people arriving daily. Croatia is usually a popular destination in the summer because of its coastline on the Adriatic.

But Croats are also flocking to vaccination sites in the country, which in recent weeks has hit records for infections and hospitalizations. Its vaccination rate is 50%, well below the average of 75% in the EU.
