“We have sought a dialogue that we have been denied over and over again,” he said. Garcia in a statement on its Facebook page and later repeated by Archipelago, the platform that coordinates the demonstration scheduled for Monday the 15th. Cubans, without exceptions ”.

Archipelago -which in addition to Garcia It has about thirty coordinators of various political orientations – it requested permission to hold a demonstration next Monday in nine cities of the country under the protection of the right to demonstrate included in the new constitution. But the request was rejected by the government that alleges that the demonstrations promote a “soft coup” and stressed that the Magna Carta establishes that socialism is “irrevocable.”

“I will walk in silence,” Garcia wrote of his protest Sunday, “carrying only a white rose. And this is not an act of heroism, it is an act of responsibility ”. The march will be “solo,” he added.

Both García and his colleagues from Archipelago indicated that the idea was to hold a peaceful protest demanding the release of prisoners – especially those arrested in the chaotic July demonstrations – for human rights and for a national dialogue.

García accused the government of ignoring his compatriots in the midst of a deep economic and political crisis.

“There are two things that I repeat to myself every night before trying, not always successfully, to sleep for a few hours: one, never to become the same thing that I criticize; two, always seek the balance between good sense, firmness and responsibility, “he said.

The government accused the United States of being behind the demonstration scheduled for March 15 as a way to destabilize the revolution within the framework of a five-decade-long policy of hostilities that includes sanctions – such as the impossibility of trade, the pursuit of ships. with oil or the prohibition of sending remittances – even actions of sabotage.

García denied having received funds or guidance from Washington or interest groups in that country.

Cuba is going through a severe economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic of COVID-19, the US sanctions and the difficulties of the financial reform initiated in January to correct the deviations from the double currency existing until then.

For its part, the Archipelago group reported shortly after that it supports García’s decision but reaffirmed the call for the March 15 marches in various parts of the country, while asking attendees to wear white, avoid provocations and not resort to violence .

“Yunior brought us to debate a decision made from a personal point of view. After an extensive debate, the Archipelago moderators decided to support it. Now that decision is also ours and Yunior has all our affection, support and respect ”, added a statement from the platform.
