Thousands of scorpions invade town, three residents fatally stung

Thousands of scorpions invaded the city of Aswan, Egypt, last weekend. This is one of the consequences of the torrential rains that fell in this region, chasing the critters from their underground hiding places, Egyptian media and the BBC report.

It all started on Friday, when severe hailstorms and heavy rains hit this region of southern Egypt. Very quickly, scorpions and snakes tried to find refuge higher up, especially in homes. Result: about 500 people were stung by the poisonous sting of these little animals and three people died.

Some of the deadliest scorpions in the world

According to Ahmed Rizk, of the Giza Agricultural Research Center, it is quite “normal for heavy rains to drive scorpions and snakes from their nests, forcing them to find new places to hide,” as he said. explained in the newspaper Al Watan.

Among the scorpions that have invaded the city, we find in particular the genus Androctonus, one of the deadliest in the world. Faced with this situation, hospitals have been placed on high alert by local authorities. At the same time, additional doses of the anti-venom were sent to medical centers in some villages as residents were urged to stay at home and schools remained closed on Sunday.
