Salt Bae: Peruvian sues Turkish chef’s restaurant in New York for discriminating against Hispanic employees

A Peruvian who worked as a waiter at a steakhouse in Manhattan, New York (USA) owned by famous Turkish chef Nusr-et Gökçe, known as “Salt Bae”, sued the company for $ 500,000. He argues that he was the victim of discrimination for being Hispanic.

The complaint of Angelo Maher ante la Manhattan Supreme Court maintains the thesis that Turkish workers are better treated than those of other nationalities, according to the New York Post.

Maher He worked there from 2017 to 2019. He claims he was placed in less lucrative sections of the restaurant than Turkish employees and that they were protected by management. He points out that even if his colleagues who came from Turkey performed poorly, they were still more highly regarded than the others.

He also says that information about how they pay tips at the restaurant was withheld from him and colleagues of other nationalities, especially from Latin America.

The Peruvian claims that he never received tips when he attended to the owner’s friends, like the famous rapper French Montana. In the document, in turn, he states that when he reported discrimination to the human resources office, he was the victim of retaliation.

Elizabeth Cruz’s case was different. She was hired in 2019 and says they asked her arrive to work in “a short skirt, high heels and a revealing blouse.” She says that the same did not happen with her Turkish companions.

“My wife is Dominican, I know how you women are”, claims the manager told her, suggesting that she is sexually promiscuous.

She claims that when she asked to go back to work in her normal uniform, she was fired after a few days.

It should be remembered that Gökçe, famous after a video in which he sprinkled salt on a cut of meat, was related to similar complaints in the same New York restaurant about null payments of tips and overtime.
