Gorillas and lions in a zoo in the Netherlands test positive for coronavirus

Several gorillas and lions in the Netherlands have tested positive for coronavirus and show flu-like symptoms, are “Down, they have less appetite, sometimes a slight cough” and some also stomach and intestinal problems, reported this Friday the affected zoo, Diergaarde Blijdorp.

In a statement, the center explained that the animals are in “Good condition and have no underlying health risks”, so they expect the “Disease is also mild” in these cases, since, based on other cases in the United States, the condition of the animal before infection is important for the course of the disease.

This zoo in the municipality of Rotterdam assured that “there have been no risks for visitors” and recalled that, under normal conditions, there is no direct contact between the public and these species.

The enclosures where gorillas and lions are kept are immediately closed at the first suspicions of coronavirus, so “the animals remain in quarantine” and cannot be temporarily visited, to give them space to rest and recover.

Keepers and veterinarians closely monitor the gorillas and lions’ health, and offer them medication when needed.

The symptoms detected so far are loss of energy and appetite, a mild cough in some cases, and stomach and intestinal problems in the case of gorillas, the zoo adds.

It is not known with certainty how these animals were infected, although it is suspected that an asymptomatic employee may have been the source of infection.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, caregivers adhere to a special protocol with protective measures that include the use of masks, gloves, a distance of 1.5 meters, additional hygiene and testing for symptoms.

It is the first time in this pandemic that any animal from Blijdorp has tested positive for coronavirus.
