Australia: thousands of anti-vaccines protest against measures to curb coronavirus

Thousands of people demonstrated this Saturday in several cities of Australia in rejection of vaccination against covid-19.

About 85% of Australians over the age of 16 are fully vaccinated.

Protesters gathered in major cities across the country on Saturday to protest against mandatory vaccination, which is only required in some states and territories for certain professional groups.

On Melbourne, several thousand people called for the imprisonment of the state’s prime minister, Daniel Andrews, and opposed a bill that gives the Victorian government more powers to fight the pandemic.

There were no clashes with the police, unlike in previous demonstrations.

In the same city, about 2,000 people turned out for a counter-demonstration, one of the first of its kind since the pandemic began.

“I am here because I am disgusted by what is happening in the streets of my city, Melbourne,” Maureen Hill told AFP, referring to the anti-vaccine protest.

“Everything that has been done has been done to save lives. I mean, it has upset a lot of people and it has affected a lot of people, but it is a global pandemic. What else can we do?” he wondered, alluding to the public health measures adopted by the authorities.

In Sydney, up to 10,000 people attended the protests, according to police.

Australia, with more than 25 million inhabitants, has registered more than 195,000 cases and 1,933 deaths related to the coronavirus.
