Chile 2021 Elections: “We must restore governance and peace,” says Christian Democrat Yasna Provoste

The Christian Democratic candidate and the only woman in the presidential race in Chile, Yasna Provoste, said this Sunday that “it is necessary to regain governance and lost peace” and asked to stop “polarization”.

“We have mobilized with those who believe that our country has a different opportunity, different from what more extreme candidates may represent”said the former president of the Senate, whom the latest polls published fifteen days before the electoral ban place in third place.

The polls agree that none of the seven presidential candidates will obtain 50% plus one of the votes necessary to win this Sunday and place Provoste below the favorites to go on to the December 19 ballot: the leftist Congressman Gabriel Boric and the far-right lawyer José Antonio Kast.

The senator disputes the center with the ruling party Sebastian Sichel (moderate right), who appears in fourth place in the polls, ahead of the progressive Marco Enríquez-Ominami, the ultra-left Eduardo Artés and the libertarian Franco Parisi.

Provoked, former minister of Michelle Bachelet and representative of the old Concertación – the coalition of center-left parties that ruled 20 years in a row after the end of the dictatorship – affirmed that there is a growing “polarization” in the country.

“Politics has to improve the climate of confrontation (…) It has to make an effort to change the axis of the conversation and advance in the principles that we have defended, of more solidarity”, he added after casting his vote in his native Vallenar (north).

The new president will have the task of leading the post-pandemic recovery, implementing the norms of the new Constitution and closing the wounds left by the 2019 protests, the most serious since the end of the military dictatorship (1973-1990), with thirty years thousands of injured.

The more than 15 million Chileans called this Sunday will also vote to completely renew the Chamber of Deputies and partially the Senate.
