“False sense of security”: WHO attributes the wave of coronavirus cases in Europe to excessive relaxation in those vaccinated

The World Health Organization (WHO) today expressed concern about the increase in infections of the COVID-19 in Europe, where two thirds of current cases are concentrated, and attributed this wave in the Old Continent to the “false sense of security” that vaccines have produced.

“Many think that with vaccines the pandemic has already ended, and that those vaccinated no longer have to take precautions,” said the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who warned that European health networks are again under intense pressure.

In this sense, Tedros insisted that vaccines “save lives, but do not completely prevent transmission”, especially since the Delta variant predominates in the world, more contagious than the previous ones.

This variant, already present according to laboratory analyzes in 99% of new cases worldwide, has caused the rate of reduction of infections with vaccines to drop from 60 to 40%, said the Ethiopian expert.

Despite this reduction in effectiveness in terms of protection against possible contagion, vaccines continue to protect at a rate of around 80% against severe forms of the disease, even with the delta variant, clarified the head of scientists from the WHO, Soumya Swaminathan.

“If you are vaccinated there is a lower risk of contracting serious forms of the disease or of dying, but there is still a risk of becoming infected or infecting others”, summarized in this regard the head of the WHO.

Tedros recalled that even those vaccinated must continue to take all kinds of precautions, such as “wear a mask, keep physical distance and avoid crowds.”

Meetings with other people, “if possible, should be held in a well-ventilated place,” he added.
