Why will the Pentagon create a group dedicated to identifying UFOs and what results can be expected?

Tuesday night, the Department of Defense of USA announced the creation of the Aerial Objects Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG), an area that will be dedicated to detecting, identifying and qualifying objects, as well as evaluating and mitigating any threats associated with Aerial Phenomena unidentified, called UAP but popularly known as ufo.

SIGHT: US intelligence report reiterates that there is no evidence of the existence of aliens

The news is all the more surprising because it puts the focus of the US Government and the Army on an issue that for decades it has preferred to marginalize. The stories and filming of alleged sightings presented since the decade of the 40s of the last century, in addition, have been constantly branded as illusory or ridiculous many times by both political and scientific authorities.

  • Is there extraterrestrial activity in the UFOs detected by the US?
  • US intelligence cannot confirm extraterrestrial activity in UFOs detected by Navy pilots
  • Expectation in the United States before secret intelligence report on UFOs

However, it is not the first news of its kind in recent months. In June, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence published a report on 144 UFO sightings, all collected by the military, and in which it was concluded that there was insufficient information to determine their origin.

It didn’t say it wasn’t alien, but it didn’t say it couldn’t be. And it is precisely there where the debate on what to do next begins.

Following the report, Undersecretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks instructed the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to develop a plan to deal more seriously and thoroughly with the UAP sightings, according to a CNN article.

Five months later we are before the creation of the AOIMSG.

COORDINATED WORK

The group, the Pentagon details in its announcement, will replace the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force, which currently operates as part of the US Navy. Those who will be in charge of supervising the work of the AOIMG will be the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

But what exactly will they do?

It is not a new job. There is data collected over years. Obviously there will be new information that the Air Force will collect in the future. The purpose of this working group is to organize this information. In the past there was a stigma on unidentified aerial phenomena that prevented them from being properly documented and organized ”, comments the Trade the director of the Institute of Astronomy at Harvard University, Abraham Loeb.

According to the Pentagon, the AOIMSG will investigate and standardize the process for reporting UAP-type incidents. “The goal is administrative, that the evidence is sorted, systematized and reports are not dismissed, in addition to removing the stigma that exists on the debate on this issue within the Air ForceComet Loeb.

In the Navy there is a similar initiative that responds to a proposal made by Senator Gilly Brandt in recent weeks. It proposes to establish better coordination between different sectors of the Government (on this issue). You have the Navy, Air Force, and other government offices that have data, but don’t share it with each other”Adds the expert.

Loeb is a prolific researcher and an authority on the world of astronomy and astrophysics. In the past, he has not hesitated to confront a large part of the scientific community that calls the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial life ridiculous.

In this sense, he assures that the AOIMSG “It will allow us to better understand these unusual observed objects. Of course the main concern is national security, determining if these objects are man-made technology. But beyond that, if he’s not human, the new question would be what is he about? It could be natural, like atmospheric phenomena that we don’t understand yet; or it could be alien technology; that is to say, that it originated outside the Earth ”.

INTERSTELLAR OBJECTS

One of the biggest discussions held during the last four years revolves around ‘Oumuamua (a Hawaiian term that could be translated as explorer), considered the first interstellar object captured by human technology.

The object, unlike any type of asteroid observed in our solar system, was detected in 2017. It was so bright that it seemed to be made of polished metal and, the most surprising thing, was that it was not attracted by the gravity of the Sun despite passing very close to its orbit. Instead she sped up and pulled away from him.

‘Oumuamua divided a large part of the scientists. Some allege that it possessed a set of gases that allowed it to carry out this maneuver and others claim that it was extraterrestrial technology.

In this last group is Loeb.

The ‘Oumuamua also motivated him to found the Galileo Project for the systematic scientific search for evidence of extraterrestrial technological artifacts together with Harvard University a few months ago. To date, the project has more than 100 scientists and is supported by the aforementioned university, in addition to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

According to Loeb, the Galileo Project has two main motivations: “UOne of them is to identify the origin of the UAP, but the second is to identify the nature of rare interstellar objects such as’ Oumuamua”.

INTRIGENT INFORMATION

Loeb highlights that the greatest achievement of the AOIMSG will be the possibility of freely accessing said information, something that he also seeks to promote with Galileo.

We seek to collect data and allow public access. It will be collected by a series of telescopes and we will analyze it in the same way as in the other fields. It will be published in scientific articles. We have already started ordering the instruments we will use and will be assembling the first telescope system on the roof of the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard in the coming months. When it is up and running, we will make copies of what you get and distribute it to different telescope systems. This data will be processed by, we hope, artificial intelligence and other algorithms, to find information of interest “, says the expert.

It should be remembered that one of the most important preliminary steps to get here was the report commissioned by the US Government in June. Although it was not conclusive – it could not determine if 143 of the 144 detected objects were human, natural or extraterrestrial – it opened the door to new debates.

But why did the US decide to take the issue seriously after so many decades marginalizing it?

A variety of reasons. One of them is the accumulation of information, the second is that more and more people discuss this topic.”, Highlights Loeb.

The expert also believes that although the report was not conclusive, it did bring good results. “Mainly two things. The report admits that there could be more UAP incidents but due to stigma they were not reported. We cannot ignore them, many of those objects were identified at the same time by different equipment such as infrared and optical sensors. From a scientific point of view it is intriguing to discover what is the origin of these objects. It’s like going fishing. The Galileo Project will seek to go fishing, if we only find uninteresting fish like sardines, we will report it. But I think the government report is important because it is intriguing, it states that this issue should be analyzed by scientists instead of being ridiculed.”, he says.

WHAT’S OUTSIDE THERE?

Perhaps one of the greatest unknowns for human beings since they populated the Earth has always been what lies beyond the sky. Will there be life? Are we the only ones in space? What does a renowned scientist think about this?

After several decades dedicated to astronomy, the most important thing I have learned is that we are not privileged. It is not true that we are the center of the universe, but rather the backyard of our sun. Data from the Kepler satellite show that half of the solar stars have a planet the same size as Earth and at the same distance. There are trillions of such systems in the Milky Way alone, but there are trillions of other galaxies in the universe. In addition, we know that many of these stars are billions of years older than our Sun, which would indicate that they went through a situation like ours billions of years ago, so today they could have enough technology to populate the entire galaxy. Instead of thinking that we are alone, that we are special and unique, we should start exploring the sky, from a totally agnostic point of view. If we don’t start looking out our window, we won’t be able to meet our neighbors.Loeb responds.

But then why haven’t we found anything yet?

So far we’ve looked for airwaves, but that could be compared to a phone call where you need the other party to be active. The alternative is to search for physical objects, such as packages that have been left in the mailbox, which in this case would be the Solar System. This is not speculation, we send equipment into space, so it is expected that other technological civilizations will do the same. We can learn from them if we find that team, so I think it should be our duty to search guided by evidence rather than prejudice “, consider the expert.
