Europe is on alert and proposes to suspend flights from southern Africa and several countries ban travelers for new variant

The European Commission proposed to suspend flights from southern Africa due to the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus and countries such as Italy and Germany have banned or plan to ban the arrival of travelers from South Africa.

“The European Commission will propose, in close coordination with the Member States, to activate the emergency brake to interrupt flights from the southern African region due to the variant B.1.1.529″, said on Twitter the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, without specifying how many countries in southern Africa were affected by this decision.

The European executive will make a proposal in this regard to member countries during a meeting scheduled for this Friday.

For its part, Germany announced on Friday that it will not admit travelers from South Africa, a day after a similar decision by the UK.

E Italy announced that it prohibited the entry into its territory of any person who has remained in the south of Africa during the “last 14 days”. The countries affected by this measure are South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Eswatini.

“The situation is evolving very fast, we want to have the maximum guarantees to stop the expansion of this variant,” a spokesman for the European Commission told AFP.
