A Kurdish woman becomes the first victim to be identified after the tragic shipwreck in the English Channel

A 24-year-old Kurdish woman from northern Iraq has become the first victim to be identified after a ship was wrecked in the English Channel last Wednesday.

Maryam Nuri Mohamed Amin He is one of 27 people trying to reach the UK from France and who died in the tragic shipwreck.

Her fiancé, who lives in the UK, told the BBC he was texting her when the group’s boat began to deflate.

She, however, tried to reassure him by assuring him that they would be rescued.

But help came too late, and she, 17 men, six other women, one of whom was pregnant, and three children died after their boat sank in the sea off the northern coast of France.

Only two people survived, one Somali and the other Iraqi, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

Both were released from the hospital and must be questioned about how many more people were on the ship.

The incident is the largest loss of life on the canal since data collection began in 2014.

“The whole world talks about Europe as a quiet place, which is nice, is that what calm means? Around 30 people dying in the middle of the sea? ”Maryam’s father, Nuri Hamadamin, told the BBC.

“It is a sin to make people go through this”added.

For his part, an uncle of Maryam confirmed to the BBC that she was one of the people who drowned in the English Channel.

In addition, he assured that his family tried to legally move to the United Kingdom twice but that, as the process “was delayed”, they are now waiting for his body to be transferred back to Iraq.

On Friday night, her father, family and friends gathered at her home in northern Iraq to share her grief and remember her.

Maryam’s best friend, Imann Hassan, said she was “very humble” and had “a big heart.”

“When she left Kurdistan she was very happy, she couldn’t believe she was going to meet her husband,” Hassan told the BBC.

“At her engagement party she told me: ‘I’ll buy a house and live near you … we’re going to live together.’

Hassan also assured that he wanted to send a message to the world: “No one deserves to die like this.”

“He tried to live a better life, he chose the UK, but he died,” he added.
