Two caravans of migrants end when they surrender to Mexican authorities

Two caravans of migrants, of the three that left the city of Tapachula (southeastern state of Chiapas) two days ago, disintegrated this Sunday after the migrants, mostly Haitians, surrendered to the authorities. mexican.

Previously, the third caravan made the same decision on Saturday when they accepted an agreement with the agents of the National Migration Institute (INM) and thus ended the three caravans that left on November 26 from Tapachula.

This group of about 1,100 migrants left the Escuintla municipality at dawn to continue their journey through the state highways to Mexico City.

The migrants walked about seven kilometers from the early hours of the morning and arrived at a National Guard station where they installed a blockade of about 20 minutes.

To prevent them from continuing to block circulation on the highway, the southern federal subdelegate of the INM, Hugo Salvador Cuéllar, arrived at the place, with whom they spoke and agreed to lift the closure of the highway in exchange for buses.

The official told the media that a dialogue was established to reach a solution and support the migrants as was done with the third caravan, on Saturday.

“We are not going to accept anyone else, we have already given a list of 1,100 people, because there may be disorder so if more come they will have to wait another day,” said Jimmy, one of the spokespersons for the Haitian migrants.

Meanwhile, Milourse, a Haitian woman, a nurse by profession and six months pregnant, said that she joined the caravan because she seeks to obtain her humanitarian visa for herself and her family.

The woman helps in health care efforts to heal people with foot injuries.

The authorities indicated that for this group there will be no extra buses, since only adults have been counted, without taking into account children, although they will also be transferred in the family nucleus.

In total, the two caravans traveled about 80 kilometers to reach a negotiation with the authorities and achieve their transfer to other states of Mexico where they are looking for migration authorities to attend to their requests since in Tapachula there is a saturation of foreigners.

Another group of migrants installed a roadblock on both lanes of the Mapstepec-Pijijiapan highway to demand their transfer by buses and they also succeeded, but it will be until Monday when they are served.

In a statement, the INM said that in order to alleviate the massive concentration of foreigners who are located in the state of Chiapas, the transfer of the regularization processes to other states of the country has been expedited, this with the aim of issuing and deliver humanitarian visas in an expeditious and orderly manner.

The INM pointed out that vulnerable groups will have priority, such as: women, minors, older adults, with some disease or disability, and their respective family nucleus, in addition to those who have a procedure resolved by the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees ( Comar).

The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) “found” more than 1.7 million illegal immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.

The migrants have started again after the Mexican authorities thwarted the advance of four caravans that left precisely from Tapachula in the first days of September.

Mexico has detected more than 190,000 undocumented immigrants from January to September, about triple the number in 2020, in addition to having deported almost 74,300, according to the Migration Policy Unit of the country’s Interior Ministry.
