Today’s figures are similar to those of the day before (92 deaths and 4,043 infections) and are below the average of the last days, but the authorities acknowledge that the statistics are usually reduced on Sundays and Mondays due to the lower number of officials processing data on weekends.

The statistics update confirms Brazil as the second country in the world with the most deaths from the pandemic, behind the United States, and as the third with the most cases, after the United States and India.

The figures in general, however, have been falling since June; returned to the levels they had in May of last year and are far below those registered in April and March of this year, when, at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, Brazil registered daily averages of up to 3,124 deaths and 77,129 infections.

According to data released by the National Council of Health Secretariats (Conass), the average number of deaths from covid in Brazil in the last week was 228 per day, with a reduction of 33.1% compared to the one registered a month ago ( 341 deaths per day on October 29).

For its part, the average number of infections in the last week fell to 9,268 per day, with a reduction of 20.45% compared to the one measured a month ago (11,651 cases per day on October 29).

Despite the reduction in averages, the country is on alert for the spread of the omicron variant in different countries, since it is considered more contagious and it is not yet known if it is resistant to vaccines, so the Government imposed restrictions on passengers from 10 African countries.

Currently, the situation of a passenger who arrived in the country from South Africa on Saturday is being analyzed, who is isolated, because he was diagnosed with covid but it is still unknown if he contracted the new variant.

The decrease in deaths and infections is attributed to the advance of the immunization process in the country despite the fact that Brazil started it late and slowly last January.

According to the latest data update from the National Health Council, until last Friday 158.5 million Brazilians, 74.4% of the 213 million inhabitants of the country, had received at least one dose of one of the vaccines against covid and another 134.6 million (63.2% of the total) had the complete immunization cycle.
