Emma Coronel: wife of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is sentenced to three years in prison in the United States

Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of former Mexican “El Chapo” Guzmán, was sentenced this Tuesday by the United States justice to three years in prison for her participation in the powerful Sinaloa cartel led by her husband.

Judge Rudolph Contreras, of the federal court in Washington, imposed on the 32-year-old former beauty queen a sentence of less than the four years requested by the prosecution, recognizing that the defendant was a teenager when she married Guzmán, and that she also admitted his guilt following his arrest in February 2021.

In the middle of this month prosecutors in the District of Columbia called for a sentence of four years in jail and five years of probation for Colonel Aispuro. They also asked that an order be approved to seize more than 1.4 million dollars, according to documents filed in the electronic system of the US federal courts.

Prosecutors claim that Colonel Aispuro She benefited financially from her husband’s criminal activities. They also say that in July 2015 “El Chapo’s” wife helped Guzmán escape from the Altiplano prison in the state of Mexico. The Mexican made it through an underground tunnel.

Colonel Aispuro has been in jail since she was arrested in February this year at Dulles Airport in Virginia.
