Madrid registers first case of omicron by community transmission in Spain

The Madrid region confirmed this Thursday a third case of a patient infected with the omicron variant of coronavirus, which is also the first to be infected by community transmission in Spain.

This is a 62-year-old man who has mild symptoms and is vaccinated with the two doses of AstraZeneca, Madrid health authorities reported today in a statement.

In this case, the affected person does not have a travel history or close contact with another person who comes from countries where this variant has been detected, as had happened in previous cases, and presented the first symptoms last Monday, November 29. .

The man is isolating himself at home, as is his cohabitating contact, who is keeping the mandatory quarantine.

Madrid authorities are investigating two other cases with suspected infection by this new variant, both with mild symptoms and also without a history of travel to countries at risk.

The first two cases of the variant omicron in Madrid, which were confirmed on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, corresponded to travelers from South Africa.
