Brazil registers 66 deaths from coronavirus in one day, the lowest number in three weeks

Brazil registered 66 new deaths this Sunday due to covid-19, the lowest figure since last November 15 (63), and has already accumulated 615,636 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic, while remaining on alert for the first cases of the omicron variant.

According to the latest bulletin from the Ministry of Health, the country reported 4,844 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total balance of infected to 22,143,091 since it registered the first, on February 26, 2020.

Statistics during weekends are, however, usually lower due to the smaller number of workers in public bodies.

In addition, the ministry reported that neither the Federal District of Brasilia, nor the state of Mato Grosso delivered their data on the pandemic this Sunday; and that Tocantins and Mato Grosso do Sul have not done it since Friday.

Despite the void in those four states – out of a total of 27 – the numbers for this Sunday are well below the daily average for the last week, which is about 200 deaths and about 9,000 positives.

The pandemic began to slow down in Brazil last June, thanks to the progress of the vaccination campaign, and is currently in a stable phase.

Despite this truce in recent months, Brazil is the second country in the world with the most deaths linked to covid-19, only behind the United States (780,000), according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

It is also the third with the most confirmed cases of the disease, after the United States (48.4 million) and India (34.6 million), according to the WHO.

The irruption of the omicron variant has once again put Brazilian regional and municipal governments on alert, which have been forced to cancel the end of the year parties and accelerate the application of the booster dose of the vaccine to avoid a new rebound .

Brazil has so far registered six cases of the new SARS-CoV-2 lineage, which was first notified in South Africa on November 25 and that everything indicates that it is more transmissible than its predecessors.

According to the Ministry of Health, all patients infected with the new strain were vaccinated and have “mild symptoms.”

Regarding immunization rates, almost 75% of the 213 million Brazilians have received the first dose, while 64% have the full schedule.
