The health authorities of Thailand reported this Monday that they have detected the first case within their borders with the omicron variant of coronavirus covid-19 in an American traveler who departed on a flight from Spain.

The 35-year-old patient tested positive for the virus on November 30, upon arrival in the country, and again in another test on December 3.

Suphakit Sirilak, general director of the Department of Medical Sciences, indicated in a press conference that the infected person is almost certainly a carrier of the omicron variant.

The traveler, who has no symptoms, was admitted to a hospital and receives medical attention, something common according to Thai protocol even for asymptomatic cases.

Suphakit stressed that this case has been classified as important, given the lack of knowledge about this new variant of covid-19, but ruled out that so far there is the possibility of cases of local transmission.
