Europe calls for vaccination with three doses due to the “rapid resurgence” of the coronavirus and the advance of the omicron variant

The president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, today lamented the “rapid resurgence” of the covid-19 in Europe and the spread of omicron variant, for which he urged citizens to get vaccinated with three doses to stop hospitalizations, especially among the non-immunized population.

This was stressed this Thursday in the plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), where the future priorities of the European Union (EU) for the recovery and implementation of the work program of the Community Executive for the year 2022 were discussed.

“We are witnessing a rapid resurgence of the covid-19 which is accompanied by an increase in hospitalizations and deaths. All of which, unfortunately, is highly concentrated among those who are not yet vaccinated. Furthermore, we are now faced with the new omicron variant, which is spreading rapidly and is of great concern ”, he alerted.

Von der Leyen called on member countries to increase vaccination rates at all ages, including youth and children, and to speed up the administration of booster injections. “We must protect ourselves and our loved ones,” he urged.

The president of the Commission recalled that, for now, inoculations offer the best defense against the coronavirus, whatever the variant.
