US: man who fatally beat cyclist in Las Vegas sentenced to 26 years in prison

A man of Las Vegas (USA) who was driving a minivan when a passenger leaned out of a window and ran over a cyclist was sentenced to up to 26 years in prison.

Rodrigo Cruz, 24, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in September to reckless driving and failing to stop at the scene of the 2020 incident in which Michelle Weissman was struck while riding her bicycle.

District Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced Cruz to between 10 and 26 years in prison, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Cruz’s minivan veered toward Weissman and 20-year-old passenger Giovanni Medina Barajas approached to shoot her down.

The impact knocked him out the window and they both died. Cruz’s vehicle nearly collided with two pedestrians, and Assistant District Attorney Michelle Fleck said Cruz showed a “Clear contempt” for others.

Cruz read an apology letter and said he took full responsibility for his actions, but the victim’s husband, Lonny Weissman, said it was “Completely outrageous”that Cruz was not convicted of murder.

Defense attorney Craig Hendricks said Cruz and Barajas were involved in “Kind of a silly, childish joke”, but that he did not believe that Cruz understood that Barajas was trying to hit the cyclist.
