AMLO says that Pedro Castillo asked him for support in the face of an impeachment attempt

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on Monday expressed his support for the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, for the presidential impeachment attempt promoted by the opposition and which failed last week.

“We have to help brother peoples, because this is not just supporting the president that emerged from a popular movement, who is a leader who is proudly born in the mountainous area, comes from poor communities,” said López Obrador at his press conference. morning.

The Mexican president revealed that he sent the Secretary of the Treasury, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) and the Ministry of Welfare to the Andean country to “support as much as we can.”

“We went, being very respectful, to support, especially what can be done to help humble people, poor people in difficult times,” he stated without specifying the date and results of the trip.

His statements come after the motion promoted by the Peruvian right and far right, including the Fujimori party Fuerza Popular, to remove the leftist Castillo.

The dismissal failed on Tuesday of last week, but he was only six votes to admit the motion and, with it, open a presidential vacancy process.

In this context, López Obrador reproached that “the adversaries” began the process of removing Castillo only a month and a half after he assumed power.

“Imagine this situation, of a conservatism, well, supported even by (the writer Mario) Vargas Llosa, something irrational. Then the president asked us for our support because there is a whole campaign against it, media, also advanced, coupled with inflation, “he mentioned.

The president of Mexico questioned that in Peru, according to him, 20% of the votes of Congress are enough to accept a request for the removal of the president and 40% to “remove” him.

The presidential impeachment motion against Castillo has been the fifth presented in the Peruvian Parliament in the last four years, which prevented former presidents Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018) and Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020) from completing their terms.

López Obrador considered that “there is something worth commenting on, because it is not only Peru.”

“During the neoliberal period, the owners of the world, because this is not spontaneous, it is not by chance, they were creating government systems so that a popular leader could not come to govern and that if a popular leader arrived they could surround him and have him tied up” , critical.
