Controversy in Ecuador over video of prosecutor’s attack on model found dead

A video about the aggression of a prosecutor from Ecuador Against a young model who was his girlfriend, who appeared dead a week ago in the coastal city of Manta, he opened a controversy on social networks about the case on Sunday.

The networks were ignited with the controversial video, in which, according to those close to the model, her boyfriend – a prosecutor of the jurisdiction – gives her a strong slap when she and other people approach a table where he was waiting.

With that video, relatives of Naomi Arcentales, a 23-year-old model, demanded that the authorities investigate the case in depth, the first reports of which warn of an alleged suicide, although relatives and activists suspect a femicide perpetrated by the agent, her sentimental partner.

The president of EcuadorGuillermo Lasso, on his Twitter account, referred to the event and asked the Justice institutions to investigate the case and not leave it unpunished.

“In memory of Naomi, I call on the institutions relevant to the case to continue working to provide reparation and for the truth to be known”Lasso wrote and expressed to the victim’s family his regret for the “Painful loss.”

“I am sure that it will be acted forcefully. And not only in this case that has shocked the country. For every girl and woman who has been and is a victim of violent acts. Stopping the violence is everyone’s commitment “added the president.

The president of the Council of the Judiciary, María del Carmen Maldonado, indicated this Sunday that she has ordered the suspension of the position of the fiscal agent involved in the case and identified as Juan Carlos I.

That measure, Maldonado added, will remain “While the Council of the Judiciary investigates possible disciplinary infractions” in its competence and the Prosecutor’s Office investigates the alleged crime.

Precisely, the State Attorney General’s Office affirmed in a statement that it continues with the development of “Proceedings to clarify the facts” and that since last Wednesday he ordered that a fiscal agent from another province take over the case “In order that it be developed in the most objective and impartial manner”.

He also recalled that there is the principle of “Reservation of investigations”, so as not to hinder the investigations that the Public Ministry carries out.

According to a latest report by the Aldea Foundation, which carries out studies and statistics on femicides in EcuadorBetween January 1 and November 15 of this year, 172 violent deaths of women due to gender have been reported in the country.

46 percent of that total corresponds to cases in which the murderer had a sentimental link or was part of the victim’s circle of trust.
