Italy registers 135 deaths from coronavirus in one day, the highest number since May

Italy registered 16,213 new infections of coronavirus and 135 deaths in the last twenty-four hours, the highest figure since May, which worries the authorities a few days before the Christmas holidays.

The new registered cases fell again this Monday due to the lower number of tests carried out on Sunday, a total of 338,222, but a number of deaths like this had not been verified since May 27.

The number of infections in Italy Since the pandemic broke out in February 2020, it has risen to 5,405,260, of which 135,778 have lost their lives.

Hospital pressure continues to increase in Italy, although far from the alarming levels of the past.

In total 987 people are admitted to intensive care, 21 more than yesterday, and 8,101 are in the ward with different symptoms (+375)

With these figures, and given the rapid spread of the omicron strain, of which more than 84 cases have already been sequenced in Italy, the Government and the regions are thinking of new measures to curb the trend.

Today the regions of Veneto (north Italy), Marche (center), Ligura (north) and the autonomous province of Trento (north) have entered the yellow zone, the second risk level of a color scale out of four. .

The regions of Calabria (south), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (north) and the autonomous province of Bolzano (north) were already in this condition, which requires wearing the mask in open spaces.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi will evaluate these possibilities and study the situation together with his scientific advisers at the meeting he has called for next Thursday, Christmas Eve.

Among the next measures, still unconfirmed, the mandatory nature of the mask in open spaces is considered, the need to carry out a negative test to attend events with a large influx or extend the mandatory nature of the vaccine to other working sectors that are in contact with the public.
