Italy exceeds 30,000 coronavirus infections in one day, the highest number in more than a year

Italy registered 30,798 new infections of coronavirus In the last twenty-four hours, the largest increase recorded since November 2020, and 153 deaths were also confirmed, according to today’s data from the Ministry of Health.

This number of infections was not seen in Italy since November 21, 2020 (34,767), although many more tests are now being carried out, 821,000 on the last day, compared to 237,000 at the time.

In total, 5,436,143 people have been infected since the health emergency began in the country, in February 2020.

The deaths, which follow the upward trend of recent days (yesterday were 137), increase the balance to 135,931 people throughout the crisis.

There has not been such a high number of fatalities since May 27, when they were 171.

Hospital pressure is also increasing, although for the moment it is far from alarming data in the worst moments of the pandemic.

In Italy, 8,381 people are admitted with different symptoms, 280 more than yesterday, Monday, while 1,012 patients require Intensive Care (+25).

With these figures, and given the rapid spread of the omicron strain, of which more than 80 cases have already been sequenced, the Government and the regions are thinking of new measures to curb the trend.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi will evaluate these possibilities and study the situation together with his scientific advisers at the meeting he has called for next Thursday, the eve of Christmas Eve.

Regarding vaccination, 46.1 million people have already completed the regimen in Italy, 85.39% of the population over 12 years of age, while 15.3 million booster doses have been given.
