Daily infections in Spain reach the maximum of the pandemic with almost 50,000

Daily infections by coronavirus in Spain this Tuesday reached the highest number in the pandemic so far, with 49,823 new cases in the last day and an increase of 86 points in the incidence, to 695 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days, while the occupation in the units intensive care also rose to 15.7%.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 16 of the 17 Spanish regions remain above 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, that is, the maximum risk indicator, with the prospect of new restrictions to stop the advance of omicron, in the eve of the Christmas holidays.

Although the average incidence is 695, there are regions with double or almost, as is the case of Navarra (1,488) and the Basque Country (1,183), in the north of Spain.

This increase in cases is also reflected in the increase in hospital occupancy, both in intensive care, with an average of 15.7%, and in normal beds (6.1%).

Given the high incidence, the Ministry of Health technicians today recommended limiting the number of people at public and social events in the coming days, since the risk of expansion of the omicron variant is “very high.”

Tomorrow, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will meet with the regional presidents to address new measures to stop the expansion of this sixth wave of coronavirus in Spain, a few days before Christmas, the date on which family and social gatherings proliferate .

Until now, the Executive has focused its strategy to fight the virus on vaccination, which is very advanced in Spain, since 89.7% of the population over 12 years of age have the complete schedule and now they are insisting on injecting the dose reinforcement to the elderly, and 84% of the population over 70 years with it.

Vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years is also progressing, with 13.4% of this population having the first dose already administered.

Given the vertiginous rise of the pandemic and the proximity of the Christmas gatherings, the demand for antigen tests, which are sold in pharmacies, has skyrocketed, and whose price has increased a lot in recent days.
