WHO: only half of countries will achieve goal of 40% vaccinated against coronavirus by year-end

Only half of the countries in the world have managed to reach the goal set by the World Health Organization (WHO) to vaccinate at least 40% of their populations against the coronavirus COVID-19 before the end of the year, the director of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, lamented today at a press conference.

This failure in the objectives occurs “While some countries distribute booster vaccines for their entire population”, denounced the head of the WHO, who by the middle of this year had already asked the most advanced countries in vaccination to delay the plans for the administration of supplementary doses.

The Ethiopian expert also assured that with a better distribution, the more than 8,000 million doses administered worldwide to date would have been enough to reach the desired 40% in all countries, prioritizing risk groups such as health workers, the elderly or people with certain ailments.

“It is difficult to understand how it is possible that, one year after the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed, three out of four health workers in Africa are still unvaccinated,” added Tedros.

Despite everything, the CEO stressed that little by little the COVAX program, with which the WHO It redistributes vaccines mainly in developing countries, it has an increasing supply, it is accelerating its delivery, and in the last three months it has been able to send some 400 million doses, roughly the same number as in the previous six months.

“Our analyzes indicate that the vaccine supply will be sufficient to vaccinate the entire global population and dose all risk groups in the first quarter of 2022.”Tedros predicted.

Although the average vaccination rate in the world exceeds 56%, in low-income countries that percentage falls to 8%, according to data from national health networks.
