Israel shortens time between second and third doses of coronavirus vaccine to three months

Israel shortened the time between the second and third doses of the vaccine against coronavirus five to three months, with the aim of improving the immunization of its population in the middle of the fifth wave of the pandemic and in the face of the spread of the omicron variant.

The Ministry of Health indicated today that, faced with this situation, “There is a growing need to promote the protection of the population against coronavirus as fast as possible”, in a statement with the announcement.

Israel was one of the first countries in the world to apply the Pfizer booster dose in the summer, a campaign that successfully contained the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Since then, to receive that extra injection, at least five months must have passed since the second dose, according to the recommendations of the expert committee that advises the Israeli government, although now that period has been shortened to three months.

So far 5.8 million Israelis have received the full schedule from Pfizer and 4.2 million already have the booster dose. The country began today the first clinical trial in the world with the fourth dose while studying its implantation in people over 60 years of age and immunodeficient.

Tel Aviv’s Sheba Hospital today administered the fourth dose to a test group of 150 health workers at the medical center, who had a low level of antibodies months after receiving the third dose.

“As far as I know, I am the first healthy person in the world to receive the vaccine. I feel very good”, said the director of the hospital’s heart transplant unit, Jacob Lavee, the first to participate in the trial.

The Ministry of Health reported today more than 2,000 new cases of covid-19 so far this day, the highest number registered in the country since mid-October, and it is believed that they could reach 3,000 before the end of the day .

These figures raise the infection rate to 2.6% and it is estimated that around 50% of new infections in the country correspond to the omicron variant, much more contagious although less lethal.

In fact, hospitalizations for covid-19 are 134 patients among the more than 14,000 active cases in the country and serious cases have fallen to 84 patients, of which 87% are unvaccinated.

The unvaccinated represent more than 95% of severe cases among those over 60 years of age.
