Australia: laboratory gives negative result to almost 500 people who were infected with coronavirus

A Sydney laboratory acknowledged on Tuesday that it sent wrong results to about 500 people who underwent a test of coronavirus covid-19, in the midst of an outbreak of contagions in Australia. Those affected, residents of that city, received a text message on Sunday to report their negative test result, which allowed them to travel to other regions of the country to celebrate the end of the year.

However, a day later, the Hospital Saint Vincent, where the tests were performed, detected errors in the process and that actually the test results were positive, and contacted the patients again.

“We sincerely regret this mistake and acknowledge the significant impact it has had on those involved.” The health center said today in a statement, the public channel ABC picks up.

According to the laboratory SydPath, who works in the aforementioned hospital, the errors were due to “unprecedented” volume of tests to detect covid-19 that resulted in “errors when processing the data.”

It will also reduce the number of daily tests to “maintain the quality” of its service.

Cases are on the rise in Australia, although it is due in part to the greater demand for tests to detect covid-19, the negative result of which is required by the regional authorities of the different territories that make up the country to allow travelers to cross. from one state of the country to another.

In the state of Victoria 2,738 new cases and 4 deaths were also reported today, while in Queensland there were 1,158 new infections and in South Australia 995 patients were confirmed.

This outbreak of cases occurs while more than 90% of the target population has received the full course of the vaccine, while the authorities plan to accelerate the administration of booster doses from January.

Despite the rising numbers, the central government has declared that it will not apply more isolation restrictions to the population, while some regional governments, such as New South Wales and Victoria, have taken some measures such as reimposing the mandatory use of the mask indoors.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the oceanic country has accumulated more than 310,000 confirmed infections, including more than 2,197 deaths, low figures compared to other countries of a similar size.
