Coronavirus infections in Brazil jump 230% in a week

Brazil reported 35,826 new infections due to coronavirus this Thursday, with an increase of 248% compared to those notified a week ago, on New Year’s Eve, at a time when the broadcast by the omicron variant it multiplies rapidly in the country, reported official sources.

The number of new infections in the South American giant this Thursday was 35.3% higher than that registered on Wednesday (27,267), which, in turn, had already risen 45% compared to Tuesday (18,759), according to the data released today by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass).

In total, Brazil already accumulates 22,386,930 confirmed cases since the coronavirus pandemic reached the country in February 2020.

The figures show an accelerated increase in positives in the country, marked by the presence of the omicron, the new variant of the virus, which this Wednesday left its first fatality in Brazil, and which may also be the first death caused by this new variant in Latin America.

A 68-year-old man, who suffered from hypertension and a chronic lung problem, died in Aparecida de Goiás, a municipality in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil, where the new variant is already responsible for 93.5% of cases of covid.

The same is not the case with the number of deaths whose average remains more or less stable between 94 and 110 daily deaths in recent weeks, with a downward trend.

According to official data, Brazil already accumulates 619,641 fatalities after the notification of 128 deaths this Thursday.

For experts, the tendency for infections to increase but deaths to continue or decrease is due to the effects of vaccination, which in the country already covers more than 67% of its 213 million inhabitants with the complete cycle.

So far, the country accumulates 265 cases confirmed by the new variant and 520 more in the analysis phase, according to figures from the Ministry of Health, which are considered outdated because studies indicate that 92.6% of those positive for covid -19 analyzed in the country are caused by the omicron.

Brazil is the second country with the highest number of deaths from the virus, after the United States, and the third in number of positives, behind the North American country and India.
