WHO records world record of 2.6 million coronavirus infections in one day

The current global wave of infections by coronavirus COVID-19 continues without brake and in the last 24 hours a new record number of 2.6 million cases was registered, according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The case curve continues its exponential rise and the current record almost triples the one that before the current wave had been measured in April 2021, with 900,000 cases then due to the rise of the delta variant.

  • WHO considers it an error to qualify the omicron variant as “mild”
  • Global deaths from coronavirus continue to decline despite the “omicron tsunami”, according to WHO figures
  • Argentina adds more than 100,000 coronavirus infections for the first time, an absolute record for the entire pandemic

The strong increases in current infections, many associated with the omicron variant, are registered especially in regions such as Europe, which in the last 24 hours confirmed 1.2 million cases, America (1.1 million) and East Asia (105,000).

In other areas, such as the Middle East or South Asia, the curve remains below previous waves, while in Africa, the first region where the omicron variant was detected, the graph seems to indicate that the peak of infections has been exceeded, although it continues in numbers well above past waves.

Despite the strong increase in cases, the number of daily deaths on the planet remains stable and in the same range of the last three months, with 8,100 global deaths in the last 24 hours, always according to WHO figures.
