The pandemic continues to rise in Brazil with almost 50,000 new cases of coronavirus

Brazil registered this Saturday 49,303 new cases of coronavirus and accumulates almost 22.5 million positives since the beginning of the pandemic, which has worsened in recent days due to the rapid spread of the omicron variant in the country.

According to the latest bulletin from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) of the 27 Brazilian states, the country reported 115 deaths associated with the coronavirus in the last day, bringing the total death toll from the disease to 619,937 .

The number of infections this Saturday is lower than the 63,292 reported on Friday, the highest since July, but it is equally high for a weekend, when the statistics are usually lower due to the less activity of public bodies.

The data indicate an acceleration of the pandemic at a time when the omicron variant is rapidly expanding throughout the Brazilian territory, where it is already the dominant variant.

  • Jair Bolsonaro is discharged after two days hospitalized for intestinal obstruction
  • France registers more than 332,000 coronavirus infections in one day, a new record for the entire pandemic

The new lineage, first detected in South Africa last November, is transmitted communally in several of the country’s large cities, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which also face separate outbreaks of influenza.

The sudden increase in the number of positives is putting pressure on the primary care of the Brazilian public health system, although for the moment it has not been felt excessively in the intensive care units.

Likewise, the number of deaths linked to covid-19 remains stable in the country, with a daily average of about one hundred daily deaths in the last week.

However, health specialists foresee a greater explosion of infections in the coming weeks, a reflection of the Christmas holidays.

In this context, the average number of daily infected has skyrocketed from 7,700 on January 2 to nearly 30,000 today.

In the last month there was also a data “blackout” apparently caused by a computer attack on the systems of the Ministry of Health that is making it difficult to know exactly the evolution of the pandemic.

Brazil is the second country in the world with the most deaths associated with covid-19, with almost 620,000 deaths, and the third with the most infections (22,499,525), behind only the United States and India.

To date, 75% of the 213 million Brazilians have received the first dose of the vaccine and 67% have the full regimen. EFE
