Communist Party of Venezuela says opposition victory in Chávez’s cradle reflects popular disgust

The leader of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), Óscar Figuera, affirmed this Monday that the victory yesterday of the opposition candidate Sergio Garrido in the repetition of the elections in the state Barinas (in which he was born Hugo Chavez) shows “that the people get fed up and rise up against the abuse of power.”

“The people get fed up and rise up against the abuse of power and blatant profiteering. Of course, the victory of the right-wing opposition does not mean a change in their precarious living conditions ”. Figuera, also a deputy, wrote on his Twitter account.

Garrido won yesterday in the electoral repetition of Barinas by obtaining 172,497 votes (55.36%) against the official candidate, former Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, who obtained 128,583 (41.27%).

Barinas had been governed since 1998 by direct relatives of Hugo Chávez (president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013), turning the region into a fiefdom that seemed untouchable until just over a month and a half ago.

Already on November 21, the opposition candidate Freddy Superlano won, by a much lower margin than that obtained this Sunday – less than 1% -, the then official candidate, Argenis Chávez.

In this regard, Figuera considered that “the leadership of the Government” and of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) “could lose honorably and by a minimal margin” on November 21, “but pride led them to create a new electoral scenario, to disqualify the PCV and make use of the entire State apparatus ”.

“The people of Barinas know that, despite the government harassment and the media siege, the PCV will remain firm in the construction of the Popular Revolutionary Alternative (APR) as a genuine option for a revolutionary solution to the crisis,” he said about the coalition. of critical chavistas that he leads.

The PCV was unable to register its candidate for Barinas, Aldemaro Sanoja, after being disqualified by the National Electoral Council (CNE), despite participating in the November 21 elections.

“The CNE has just declared the candidacy of comrade Aldemaro Sanoja for the Barinas state governorship rejected / disabled, after having closed the application process,” the PCV denounced on December 7.

The preliminary report of the Electoral Observation Mission of the European Union (EOM-EU) stated that “the lack and independence of the judiciary and the disrespect for the rule of law adversely affected the equality of conditions and fairness and transparency of the elections” of November.

“In these elections, the suspension of the candidates’ rights mainly affected the PCV and the dissident parties of the ruling coalition,” the report concluded.
