Portugal registers ninth day in a row with an increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19

The number of entered with COVID-19 in Portugal it increased for the ninth consecutive day and exceeded 1,500 patients, with the incidence at 14 days soaring and above 3,200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The latest bulletin of the Portuguese Directorate General of Health (DGS) states that there are 1,588 people admitted with the virus, after an increase of two hundred in just two days, and of which 161 are in intensive care (11 more than the previous day ).

The 14-day incidence, which was 2,438.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday, climbed to 3,204.4 cases, and the Rt transmission index stood at 1.24.

This day, 20,212 new infections were reported, below the peaks of almost 40,000 a few days ago, although on Mondays the figures are always more moderate due to the effect of the weekend on the number of tests carried out.

It is almost double that of last Monday’s data (10,554), although that figure was also influenced by the New Year.

This Monday, 20 deaths were also reported, in line with the levels of recent weeks.

The country, which is facing a fifth wave of infections driven by the omicron variant -which already represents 92.5% of infections-, has registered 1,660,058 positives and 19,133 deaths since the pandemic broke out.

Portugal reopened schools on Monday, a week after the usual date, with new rules on COVID-19 contacts, as it will no longer be necessary to confine an entire class when a case of COVID-19 is detected.

This week teleworking is once again mandatory and the restrictions on the requirement of a digital certificate or negative test to access certain establishments and services are maintained, as well as the tighter border controls.

The nightlife is still closed and can only open from Friday night.
