France breaks a new record for coronavirus infections with 350,000 in one day

The French Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, indicated this Tuesday that France has once again exceeded the absolute record for infections in one day, with 350,000 positives in 24 hours, after the previous peak of more than 322,000 reported last Thursday.

This result is well above the average of 250,000 daily positives of last week and 121,000 of the last week of December, a sign of the expansive growth of the variant omicron.

“Since the beginning of the crisis, we have never observed similar figures,” Véran told the Senate, which is reviewing as of Tuesday the bill for the introduction of a vaccination passport in the country, which vetoes entry into bars , cinemas and other public places to the unvaccinated.

The Senate Commission that reviewed the text, after its prior approval in the National Assembly, introduced more than thirty amendments, including that the passport is only requested when there are more than 10,000 hospitalized for covid (There are more than 22,000 currently) or to reserve it for those over 18 years of age, and not 12 as the Government expected.

This does not imply that the new measures are definitively added to the bill that after the vote this Tuesday in the first reading of the Senate, in the hands of the conservative opposition, must return to the National Assembly in view of its ratification.

Véran insisted on Tuesday before the Senate that the epidemiological situation is causing a “tidal wave” of contamination and defended that the vaccination passport seeks to increase the incitement to the vaccine and to toughen the fight against those who falsify theirs or commit fraud.

In parallel to the increase in infections, the situation worsens in hospitals where this Monday more than 22,000 patients were counted, about 4,000 of them in ucis, according to figures from health authorities.
