Airlines canceled more than 2,700 flights in U.S on Sunday, as a winter storm combining high winds and frost was poised to hit the country’s east coast over the holiday weekend.

Canceled flights as of 12:30 p.m. ET (1730 GMT) on Sunday included more than 2,700 arrivals and departures from or within the United States, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com. More than 1,500 flights were delayed, according to the data.

American Airlines Group Inc had more than 600 flight cancellations. Nearly 95% of flights leaving Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, a hub for American Airlines, were cancelled, the FlightAware website showed.

American Airlines allows weather-affected customers to rebook flights free of charge.

A major winter storm will impact the eastern United States from Sunday through Monday, the National Weather Service said. The highest snowfall totals were expected along the Appalachian spine, as well as in the lower Great Lakes.

The most significant frosts were expected over the Carolinas, with impacts to travel through those regions, the NWS said. About 74 million people were under winter weather alerts as of Saturday night, according to the NWS.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Sunday that people should avoid nonessential travel in storm-affected areas. The governors of Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina had declared emergencies over the storm.
