Mexico scores another record of infections with more than 60 thousand new cases in one day

Mexico registered this Wednesday 60,552 new infections of COVID-19 in one day, marking a new maximum in the almost two years of the pandemic, according to figures from the Ministry of Health.

In the daily report released in the afternoon, Health statistics indicate that Mexico already has 4,495,310 cases of COVID-19.

Deaths in the last 24 hours were 323, for a total of 302,112.

This increase in infections is also the largest in relation to the previous day, since this Wednesday it exceeded the record for Tuesday by more than 10,000, when they totaled 49,343.

Health authorities have indicated in recent days that as the highly contagious omicron variant circulates more and more, a sharp increase in infections was expected in this fourth wave of the pandemic.

However, deaths have remained at stable levels, according to statistics.

Health authorities and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself, who developed COVID-19 last week, have indicated that the effects on health in the vast majority of cases are minor compared to the previous variants.

López Obrador was isolated last week after testing positive for COVID-19 and reappeared last Monday at his morning press conference.

This was the second time that the leftist president tested positive for COVID-19 after being infected a year ago, also registering mild symptoms.

Experts point out that the COVID-19 infections in Mexico, with 129 million inhabitants, would be many more than those reported by the authorities because this is one of the countries that does the least analysis in the world.

According to a monitoring by the University of Oxford, last week Mexico carried out an average of 0.4 tests per 1,000 inhabitants.

In laboratories and in the modules of the mayor’s office in Mexico City to detect the coronavirus, numerous lines have been observed since the beginning of the year.

Faced with the impossibility of responding to the demand for tests, the health authorities asked last week that all those who present symptoms be considered carriers of the virus even without the analysis and therefore must isolate themselves and only go to hospitals if their condition deteriorates.
