Colombia: Two Soldiers Die in Attack Perpetrated by the Clan del Golfo

Two soldiers of Colombian Army died and another was injured in an attack with explosives perpetrated by alleged members of the Gulf Clan in El Bagre, department of Antioquia, official sources reported this Thursday.

The Secretary of Human Security of Antioquia, Luis Fernando Suárez, told journalists that there was “a terrorist attack with explosives, which led to the death of two Army soldiers.”

For its part, the Army rejected “the vile murder” of the soldiers who were carrying out search and control tasks when they were attacked with explosives by alleged members of the Clan del Golfo, the main criminal gang in the country of paramilitary origin.

The top leader of the Clan del Golfo, Dairo Antonio Úsuga David, alias “Otoniel”, was captured on October 23 in an area near Urabá, after which the Colombian president, Iván Duque, predicted the end of that criminal gang.

However, since the capture of “Otoniel” the Clan del Golfo has intensified its attacks against the Army and the Police in various areas of Antioquia.

“Otoniel” is pending extradition to the US, where he is required by courts in New York and Florida for charges related to drug trafficking.

This attack by the Clan del Golfo adds to what happened in the Colombian city of Saravena, in the department of Arauca, where at least one person died this morning after the explosion of a car bomb that also left five injured.

Arauca is the scene of the war between the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC dissidents.

That fight has intensified in recent months and so far this year some 40 people have been murdered in Saravena, the target of the terrorist attack, and in the neighboring municipalities of Tame, Fortul and Arauquita, according to the legal representative of the Human Rights Foundation.
