Despite these figures, Mexico remains the sixteenth country in the world in number of confirmed infections and is the fifth with the most deaths from this cause, behind the United States, Brazil, India and Russia, according to the count of the University JohnsHopkins.

The health authorities recognize that, based on death certificates, the country may be close to 455,000 deaths and estimate that Mexico actually accumulates 4,797,085 infections.

Of the number of confirmed cases, there are 342,788 active, who have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and account for 7.1% of the total.

In addition, since the start of the pandemic, 3,583,463 people have recovered.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals stands at 38% and the use of intensive care beds at 22%.

The person in charge of managing the pandemic in the country, Hugo López-Gatell, stated on Tuesday that the cases of COVID-19 caused by the omicron variant in Mexico are 10 times higher than hospitalizations and deaths.

“Cases are 10 times higher than hospitalizations and deaths, the difference between rapidly growing cases and hospitalizations and deaths is very substantial,” he said.

He added that, although it is a variant that spreads quickly, the vast majority of sick people have mild symptoms, similar to other respiratory illnesses.

Unlike other countries, Mexico spent Christmas holidays without restrictions due to the pandemic. And despite the rise in infections, the Mexican government has defended its management of the health crisis.

Regarding deaths, Mexico City, the focus of the pandemic, accumulates about 18% of all deaths nationwide.

VACCINATION PLAN

The authorities also indicated that within the vaccination program 157.88 million doses have been administered, adding 720,356 during the last day.

The Government of Mexico affirms that it is the seventh country that has applied the most doses in absolute numbers.

Of its 126 million inhabitants, 83 million in the country have at least one dose of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, 76.2 million have completed their vaccination schedule.

Since the end of December 2020, 201.3 million vaccine doses have arrived in Mexico from the American Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna, the British AstraZeneca, the Russian Sputnik V and the Chinese CanSino and Sinovac.

Two weeks ago, the Mexican government said that it hopes to have the Cuban Abdala vaccine against COVID-19 in the second quarter of 2022 and it would be considered as a booster dose.
