Violent events in Mexican prisons are common. According to figures from the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) of Mexico, during 2020 there were 926 fights, 70 homicides and eight riots in the prison system.

Analysts attribute the situation of violence in Mexican prisons to overcrowding, the growth of the prison population and the scarce custody personnel, who in many cases have low salaries, which favors corruption.

In Mexico there are 288 detention centers with a capacity for 217,000 inmates, but the prison population is 223,416 inmates.
