Unemployment: Number of job seekers rises in third quarter

According to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor, the number of unemployed in category A, that is, without activity, increased by 0.6% in the third quarter throughout France (excluding Mayotte). A further 17,400 people registered, bringing the number of Category A job seekers to 3.028 million.

Taking into account the decline in activity (categories B and C Pôle emploi), the number of job seekers in France increased by 0.2% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, i.e. 8,800 more people are registered, and the total number of job seekers is 5.352 million, according to the Statistics Office of the Ministry of Labor (Dares).

However, throughout the year, unemployment continued to decline in the third quarter, with 120,000 fewer job seekers (i.e. 3.8%) compared to summer 2022. The trends are not the same depending on the age groups still older than one year: the number of job seekers under the age of 25 increased by 3.1% over the year, while among those aged 25-49 it decreased by 4% and even by 6.4% among those aged 50 years and older.

Increase in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and New Aquitaine

Compared to the second quarter, where the number of unemployed category A decreased slightly, by 0.2%, the number of unemployed category B, who were engaged in reduced activity for a maximum of 78 hours per month, on the contrary, increased noticeably by 3.1%. %, with another 24,900 people in this situation. But in category C, that is, those who carried out reduced activity for more than 78 hours per month, there are 3.3% fewer unemployed.

The Ministry further notes that “recruitment in the Pôle emploi increases” by 0.7%, with “a sharp decrease in layoffs and first admissions”, and, on the other hand, an increase in “completion of temporary appointments”, “return of inactivity” and “return of inaction” ordinary termination”. Finally, “exits from the Pôle emploi are reduced sharply” by 4.4%, with “a sharp reduction in the number of update errors and search stops” (namely, in particular de-registration from the Pôle emploi and exit from the labor market).

By region, the number of category A job seekers increases by 1.6% in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, by 1.4% in New Aquitaine and by 1.1% in the Grand Orient. It fell by 0.9% in the overseas departments (excluding Mayotte) and by 0.7% in Corsica, while it remained stable in Ile-de-France.
