Storms and floods: the state announces the creation of an 80 million euro fund to support affected farmers

Demolished greenhouses, flooded buildings, crops under water… Farmers affected by hurricanes and floods in November in Brittany, Normandy and Hautes-France will be able to benefit from an “80 million euro fund,” Agriculture Minister Marc Fenot announced this Wednesday.

“As for the agricultural world – I unite Brittany, Normandy, Hautes-France (…) this is a fund of 80 million euros that will cover both crop losses and investment losses that will not be covered by insurance subjects,” – the minister said in an interview with France Info. “We have created a fund that allows us to avoid (…) racket holes” in covering damages, he added.

‘Hundreds’ of farms in northern France are worried

Storms Ciaran and Domingos, followed by rainfall that caused rivers to overflow in Hautes-de-France, seriously impacted farmers in these regions. Head of State Emmanuel Macron mentioned the “exceptional support fund” for farmers on Tuesday during a trip to Pas-de-Calais.

Without specifying the amount, Marc Fenot clarified on Wednesday evening on the France Info program that “about a hundred” farms in northern France have “flooded buildings, but there are also flooded lands and flooded crops.”

He pointed out that “200 head of cattle” were killed, “drowned due to the too sudden rise of the water” and that “there is no doubt “several thousand hectares” of sugar beet crops that “cannot be harvested.” “Thanks to the recession, we will have a better idea of the extent of the damage,” the minister emphasized.
