“Surprise trolleys” from Carrefour in Drancy: “At this price I’ll try my luck”

Laurent received the SMS when he was almost at the door of the Carrefour hypermarket in Drancy (Seine-Saint-Denis), opening at 8:30 am this Friday. “Your store offers you a surprise trolley for only 49.90 euros! Come and enjoy. “I’m a regular, I’ve been coming here for centuries,” slips the father of a small 8-year-old boy, a professional garbage collector with a strong build. Like other morning shoppers, he slipped into the appliance department. There, next to a pyramid of discount microwaves, ten carts lined up in a row, covered in thick black plastic and numbered.

The Carrefour group has adopted a concept already tried by its rival Auchan, called the “mystery trolley”. The operation was recently launched by Alexandre de Palmas, chief executive of Carrefour France from Vasqueala (North), who promised in a LinkedIn video “a plethora of mystery items” sold for a third of their original price and taken from dormant stocks. Every Friday, around fifty hypermarkets will now offer their customers the opportunity to blind buy around ten trolleys. “Not everyone will find something for themselves,” warned Alexandre de Palmas.
