“We don’t get what we pay for”: warranty extension in the sights of the insurance police

Do insurance companies honor their contracts? Be it smartphone insurance against theft, breakage or damage, extended warranty on home appliances, train or plane trip cancellation insurance, this type of insurance has made inroads into our daily lives. According to the Federation of Affinity Guarantees, it is “any guarantee of insurance, assistance or ancillary service associated with a product or service package distributed by a distributor other than the insurer and which is not the customer’s primary reason for purchasing the product.” and insurance (FG2A).

Small sums that together still amount to between 3.5 and 4 billion euros in contributions paid annually by the French. But the Prudential Regulation Authority (ACPR), which oversees insurance companies, has decided to slam its fist on the table as consumer complaints rise. Thus, affinity insurance accounted for 18% of disputes received by the insurance mediation office in 2022 (12% by telephone only).
