Amazon stops selling single-use plastic items across the EU starting today

As of today, cotton buds and straws, forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks, plates, drink stirrers, sticks that are placed and support balloons, among others will not be sold on Amazon.

Amazon will stop selling single-use plastic items, such as drinking straws, cotton swabs, plates, cutlery and glasses made of this material starting this Monday in its virtual stores in the European union, UK and Turquía.

Specifically, the electronic commerce giant sent a communication to its sellers last October, to which Europa Press had access, in which it informed them that from that date this new policy of the multinational for comply with European regulations aimed at avoiding plastic waste.

The multinational is thus ahead of the date set by the European directive 2019/904, which sets July 2021 as the day for member states to implement policies aimed at limiting the sale of these products to promote the transition to a circular economy.

In this way, this policy will prohibit the sale of certain single-use plastic products (disposables) and those manufactured with plástico oxodegradable in Amazon virtual stores in the UK, the European Union and Turkey.

So, from today it will not be sold in the marketplace single-use plastic products such as cotton buds and straws (except for medical or sanitary products), forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks, plates, drink stirrers, sticks that stand on and support balloons , among others.

Nor will food containers made of food be available in the virtual stores of the platform. expanded polystyrene, such as boxes, with or without a lid, used to contain food that is intended for immediate consumption, on-site or to go. In addition to beverage containers made from expanded polystyrene, including stoppers and lids, and products made from oxodegradable plastics.

Amazon has indicated to its sellers that those who had stored some type of these products in one of its logistics centers could sell the inventory until this Sunday or request that it be sent to the location of their choice at no cost, since the company does not will charge no fee for inventory removal.
