Emmanuel Macron announces ‘fertility check’ at age 20 and improved access to PMA

President Emmanuel Macron announces in an interview with Elle magazine on Wednesday that he wants to improve access to assisted reproduction (MAP) and fleshes out his sweeping plan to combat infertility, which will begin with a full screening of every person in their 20s.

The head of state announced this plan to increase the birth rate at a press conference on January 16. “Every woman should have free control over her body. But one number stands out to me: the fertility rate is 1.8 and the desire to have children is 2.3,” he told a women’s magazine in an interview covering several topics considered important to the female electorate.

He clarified that his plan to combat infertility will revolve around “prevention,” “pathways,” and “research.” Thus, he states that a “fertility screening” around age 20 will be offered to everyone and reimbursed by health insurance to “establish a full assessment, spectrogram, or/and ovarian reserve.” “We are going to organize events in favor of self-preservation of oocytes for women who want to have children later,” he also indicated.

Opposition GPA

To reduce the waiting time for access to PMA – currently between 16 and 24 months – Emmanuel Macron intends to “open up the possibility of oocyte self-preservation to private centers”, which “has until now been reserved only for hospitals”.

On the other hand, in an interview with Elle magazine, the head of state reiterates his opposition to surrogacy (GPA). “I say again: I am not a supporter of this. This is incompatible with the dignity of women, it is a form of commercialization of their bodies,” he insists.

“However, I obviously believe that parents of children born through surrogacy abroad need to be respected and supported. These are loving families,” he adds.

A recurring topic of political controversy, the GPA resurfaced in the news in late April thanks to a tweet by Marion Marechal. The head of the Reconquest list for the European elections responded to the paternity announcement of fashion designer Simone Porte Jacquemus and her husband with a message asking “where is the mother?” “.

“I was shocked by how this controversy arose and what it says about the homophobia of some French political parties,” Emmanuel Macron said.
