The price of the dollar in Chile was trading higher at the opening on Monday, given the escalation of geopolitical tensions at the global level, and in the midst of an advance in the greenback.

The exchange rate appreciated 0.35% to 799.40 Chilean pesos per dollar. Meanwhile, the leading index of the Santiago Stock Exchange, the IPSA, fell 1.86% to 4,558.45 units.

“The dollar starts the week with gains due to the escalation of geopolitical tensions”said the Monex financial group in a report.

“The possibility of a Russian attack on the Ukraine being executed canceled out the demand for riskier assets. With this, practically all emerging currencies operate in negative territory, including the peso”, he added.

At the regional level, the currencies and stock markets of Latin America operated with losses on Monday, amid a global advance of the dollar, at the beginning of a week that will keep the markets pending the monetary policy meeting that the Federal Reserve will hold. from the United States.

The dollar rose on Monday, moving away from its recent two-month lows, fueled by tension between Russia and the West over Ukraine and the possibility that the Federal Reserve will adopt a more aggressive stance this week.

The dollar index, which compares the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up about 0.4% and touched its highest level in two weeks.
