The dollar price in Chile it operates on the rise on Thursday, in the face of a global strengthening of the dollar and a more aggressive stance on the part of the United States Federal Reserve (Fed).

The exchange rate is quoted at 813.23 Chilean pesos per dollar, an advance of 0.88% compared to Thursday’s close, at 806.08, according to the Bloomberg agency.

Globally, the prospect of a faster or higher rate hike in the United States helped the dollar have its best week in seven months. The dollar appreciated to 115.43 yen, approaching this year’s high of 116.34 hit on January 4.

According to the Reuters agency, the yield on benchmark 10-year US Treasury bonds advanced to 1.82%, compared to 1.80% the day before. The return on two-year notes, more sensitive to expectations of rate hikes, reached 1.19%.

“The fact that the Federal Reserve is much more aggressive has shaken the markets”said Jeremy Gatto, portfolio manager at Unigestion, Switzerland.

“Markets can live with rate hikes, but the main issue is still the balance sheet”, he added. Markets have been buoyed by all the stimulus that was injected during the COVID-19 crisis, “so if it starts to reduce liquidity, that changes the game”.
