Ministry of Culture awarded posthumous recognition to Víctor Gil Mallma, the “Hummingbird of the Andes”

The culture Ministry awarded the distinction of Meritorious Personality of Culture to Víctor Alberto Gil Mallma, in posthumous recognition of his outstanding work as a composer, author, singer-songwriter and performer from Huancayo, with which he has contributed to the dissemination and safeguarding of the traditional music of the center and the identity music of the country as a whole.

Likewise, the musical work of Víctor Alberto Gil Mallma, outstanding author, composer, singer-songwriter and performer better known by the artistic name of “Picaflor de los Andes” was declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation; for his contribution to the enrichment, appreciation and continuity of traditional forms of music and dance from the central Peruvian highlands associated with intangible cultural heritage; and for his important contribution to the construction of the musical and sound identity of the country.

About Victor Alberto Gil Mallma

Don Víctor Alberto Gil Mallma, was born on April 28, 1928 in the district of El Tambo, province of Huancayo, department of Junín. He was a prominent singer-songwriter and composer from Huancayo who, based on the list of works registered in his name before APDAYC, found 127 songs by him, mostly huaynos (84). His works are completed by the huaylarsh (21), mulizas (12), santiagos (4), tunantadas (3) and a carnival of costumbrista character (Huanay carnival).

He died on July 14, 1975, in the facilities of the General Hospital of Chulec, in the district of La Oroya, Junín, but he left us important compositions, among which stand out: “Aguas del Río Rímac”, “Maldita passion”, “Mi chiquitín”, “Barrio de Piñonate”, “My sweet love”, “Witch” and “A passenger on the road”.

Their children were in charge of providing the information for the preparation of the respective technical files, and they accompanied the recognition and declaration processes from start to finish, with the technical support and coordination of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Junín to achieve recognition. .

“Hummingbird of the Andes” sang to life, to unrequited love, to disappointment, but also to the working and migrant class, with the same feeling and emotion. For his outstanding career, he received the “Rising Sun” award (1964), “El Disco de Oro” (1965), “El Naylamp de Oro” (1969), “Golden Microphone” (1969) and the “Circe Trophy” (1972). In addition, he was deserving of various awards and considered the Incontrastable’s Favorite Son.

It should be noted that the distinction of Meritorious Personality of Culture is the recognition granted by the Ministry of Culture to natural or legal persons who have made a significant contribution to the cultural development of the country.
