How heavy!”: The theatrical comedy that shows that fat women also cry

For as long as she can remember, her weight has always been the main topic of conversation at family and friends gatherings. Countless weight-loss recipes and exercise routines followed her for years until she finally Monica Torres She decided to put a stop to everything, accept herself as she is and defend her right to choose her own processes and pace of life. All this painful but instructive experience is part of the plot that will be brought to the stage through the comedy “Qué pesas”, which premieres tomorrow at the theater Square. Together with Claudia Berninzón and Issa Ringgold, the trio of actresses tells how complicated it is to live in a world where being fat is a social stigma. The pretext for this conversation is an international casting to which they attend and in which they will also talk freely about the professional typecasting they suffer due to their overweight.

“We are normal women who simply, due to various factors, are overweight. We want a role that allows us to develop and in which weight does not become the central theme of the character.”

Monica Torres / actress About the typecasting to which television subjects chubby actresses.

From real life to the stage

“The work is based on a conversation I had with Claudia. We both wondered how many times we’ve had to play the same roles on TV because we’re fat. We began to think about why this was happening if we are different people, with such different upbringings and experiences.”recalls Torres. And it’s true, roles like the girl who falls in love with the most handsome guy in the neighborhood and he never gives her a ball, the one who always has a sandwich in her mouth, or the good-natured but unpopular friend, are often repeated on their resumes while they wait for the opportunity. to say something more and get out of the stereotype. “When the pandemic was over, Issa appeared with the same need to be heard. So we decided to do something.”, keep going. It was thus that they summoned Regina Limo and Gonzalo Rodríguez Risco to write the story. After long hours of conversation, the script was born that starts from the most personal side of the actresses. “It is not a work created with pure fiction. The fictionalized parts serve to be able to speak more fluently about the subject, but each one of us has a moment that is very much our own. This has been like a catharsis, we have thrown away everything we felt, what we had inside”.

Choosing to use humor to narrate his experiences is also a way of reflecting. For the remembered Norma of the soap opera Thousand trades “It is one thing to make comedy with what happens to you and another is to invent crazy scenes like that in which a chubby jump is capable of creating an earthquake. At one time I accepted it but I realized that I did not have to do it ”. To this is added the urgency of showing real stories and changing the chip. Can’t chubby women be attractive, flirtatious or successful? “We -Torres firmly asserts- are normal women who simply, due to various factors, are overweight. We want a role that allows us to develop and in which weight does not become the central theme of the character.”. The content producers have the floor.
