Alejandro Sanz opens his heart: What did he say about his new EP “Correcaminos”, about Shakira and Tony Succar?

‘Correcaminos’ was born from wanting to share a song with Danny, a different, unique artist, with a very sophisticated way of understanding music and a vocal technique that I like. For a long time we had been talking about doing something together, and this song that talks about the attitude towards life, about overcoming obstacles, about how one has to fight for what they want, for the path they chose. Also, I liked the metaphor, that funny part of the cartoon. The coyote is the obstacles that exist between what you want to achieve and you”, clarifies -smiling- the singer-songwriter from Madrid from Spain.

─But, El Correcaminos did not always manage to escape from the coyote, he was caught twice.

Don’t give me a spoiler, don’t tell me he caught it (Laughs).

─What does this song that you say is one of your fetishes, a cult object, a musical adventure represent in your life?

It’s a little vindicate my way of making music. I don’t limit myself to any genre because I believe that with music you have to be generous and grateful. There are good things in all of them and also things that you like less, and urban music has been in my repertoire for many years combined with pop, with flamenco…, in “No es lo mismo”, “La tortura” and in others. more topics. I wanted to do that kind of mix again and above all do it with someone who motivated me a lot.

─When you compose, do you make concessions to what is fashionable?

One of the best formulas for not going out of style is not to be in style. I don’t believe in fashions because they are very dangerous. Only authentic things that really open a path for us have the ability to create fashion. The rest are colored popsicles that are diluted with water, they don’t last long. “Torture”, for example, came out 16 years ago and continues. Hundreds of thousands of songs have since come out, and most of them are not here to stay. Things that are done with truth, with magic, with good vibes and lots of music, work.

─And do you have plans to do a new collaboration with Shakira?

I would love to, but you have to find the moment to do it. I really believe in collaborations, and the one I did with Shakira opened a new era, made music history. Collaborating with other artists is always something beautiful and is part of what music means, which is sharing; but you have to look for the moment and the song.

─Is it true that from a very young age, music served as a shield to hide your shyness?

In fact, most artists I know are shy, and trying so hard not to be shy have turned into emotional exhibitionists. By opening ourselves up, we try to fight against that shyness, it’s a strange, curious relationship.

“Tony Succar is a tremendous musician, in fact he has several albums doing mythical, classic, very interesting songs. I really liked what he did, he also dabbled in flamenco”

─And did shyness ever limit your life?

I sure do, but I prefer not to remember things that I haven’t done out of shyness because one regrets the things that they didn’t do more than the things that they did.

─In October of last year, Tony Succar, Peruvian percussionist who won two Latin Grammys, shared a video in which he is seen accompanying you with the cajón in a show in honor of businessman Jr Rindinger. Do you know his work? What do you think?

He is a tremendous musician, in fact he has several albums doing mythical, classic, very interesting songs. I really liked what he did, he also dabbled in flamenco. I think he’s in Miami, let’s call him to play.

─You have sold more than 25 million records worldwide and won 24 Latin Grammys and 4 American Grammys. What is the most important recognition you have received?

Yesterday, which was Father’s Day, here in Spain, my daughter gave me a sheet on which she wrote: “Happy Father’s Day, I love you, Dad.” For me, that is the greatest recognition. All the others are beautiful and I feel very grateful and honored because the industry gives them to you, your own colleagues. That gives it a very important value.

─Alejandro, let me know that the 10 minutes are over, that this should be my last question. Do you have a dream to fulfill?

Not waking up from this dream that I have had to live.
